William Middlebrook (c1811-1861)

  • was born about 1811 in Colne, Lancashire.
  • he worked as a weaver, initially on hand-looms, but later on power-looms.
  • he died of consumption at his home in Barrowford on 25th September 1861, aged 50.
  • he married Mary Clarkson (widowed daughter of William Pollard and Margaret Duerden) at Colne on 25th August 1835.
  • they had seven children:
    1. Margaret Middlebrough was born c1836, but was buried at Colne on 28th March 1836.
    2. James Middlebrough was born c1836, but was buried at Colne on 28th March 1837.
    3. Betsy Middlebrook was born at Colne c1838. She married Richard Dunderton at Burnley on 21st April 1864 and settled at Barrowford.
    4. John Middlebrook was born at Colne in 1841. He initially worked as a weaver and later as a hatter. He married Mary Sharp at Barrowford on 11th February 1879 and they had at least a daughter:
      1. Emily Mary Middlebrook was born at Barrowford in 1880, but she died in 1882, aged 1.
      John died at St Anne's-on-Sea near Blackpool, Lancs.
    5. Rufus Middlebrook (1845-1917)
    6. Priscilla Middlebrook was born on 21st July 1845 at Buck Street, Colne. This twin sister of Rufus died of convulsions on 13th March 1846 at Windy Bank, Colne.
    7. Mary Martha Middlebrook was born at Colne c1849. She initially worked as a cotton winder and in 1881 was lodging with the family of her half-sister Sarah Ann in Barrowford. She remained a spinster and later ran a sweetshop, lodging with William Rufus in Norfolk Street, Nelson. She died in 1904.

Rufus Middlebrook (1845-1917)

  • was the son of William Middlebrook.
  • was born on 21st July 1845 at Buck Street, Colne, Lancashire.
  • he mainly worked as a power-loom weaver.
  • he died in December 1917.
  • he married, firstly, Mary Georgiana S Henderson in Liverpool in 1868.
  • they had a daughter:
    1. Merrette Middlebrook was born at Barrowford c1870.
  • he married, secondly, Catherine Tyrrell (daughter of Thomas Tyrrell and Catharine Carroll) at St Anne's RC Church, Blackburn on 23rd March 1878.
  • they had five children:
    1. William Rufus Middlebrook (1878-1942)
    2. Herbert Middlebrook was born c1881, but died on 18th April 1883 of bronchitis at Blackburn, aged 2.
    3. Catherine Middlebrook was born on 18th March 1883, married John MacDonald in 1905 and died on 24th March 1949.
    4. Herbert Middlebrook was born on 15th October 1886 and died on 15th February 1966. He married Mary Clarke in 1908 and they had 2 children:
      1. Ivy Middlebrook
      2. Herbert Middlebrook
    5. Mary Middlebrook was born on 26th October 1887, married Charles Lowe in 1906 and died on 30th June 1943.

William Rufus Middlebrook (1878-1942)

  • was the eldest son of Rufus Middlebrook.
  • was born on 22nd August 1878 at Blackburn, Lancashire.
  • he worked as a power-loom weaver, later becoming a tackler or weaving overlooker.
  • he died on 20th January 1942.
  • he married Agnes Oddy (daughter of Benjamin Oddy and Ann Sutcliffe) at St Barnabas', Blackburn on 26th December 1896.
  • they had five children:
    1. Bertha Middlebrook was born on 9th July 1897 at Blackburn, but died on 8th September 1897.
    2. Frank Middlebrook was born on 6th June 1898 at Blackburn, but died on 12th January 1900.
    3. Wilfred Middlebrook (1899-1989)
    4. Sydney Middlebrook was born in 1905 at Nelson, Lancashire.
    5. Ida Middlebrook was born in 1908 at Nelson, Lancashire.

Wilfred Middlebrook (1899-1989)

  • was the son of William Rufus Middlebrook.
  • was born on 18th December 1899 at Blackburn, Lancashire.
  • he joined the Royal Navy during the Great War.
  • he worked as a weaving overlooker.
  • he moved south to Wiltshire in the 1920s.
  • he married Margaret Anderton (daughter of Thomas Anderton and Sarah Eastwood) at Nelson, Lancashire on 9th April 1921.
  • they had three children:
    1. Mollie Middlebrook, who married Kenneth Ralph Charles. They have three children:
      1. Christine Elizabeth Charles
      2. Hilary Anne Charles
      3. Megan Sarah Charles
